Kelsea Ballerini – Kelsea – Album Review
Kelsea Ballerini is a 26-year-old American country music singer and songwriter from Knoxville, Tennessee. Kelsea, her third album, is a 13-track, 40-minute album mixing classic country sounds with modern lyrics and a little pop to get you moving.
Although a country album, as is the way with many albums coming out of Nashville recently it has a pop vibe to it. The poppiness does not detract from an album of nicely written songs – on all of which Kelsea has co-writing credits – and it is not overproduced.
The strongest songs on the album are Love Me Like A Girl – which has a Kacey Musgraves kind of sound to it; Hole in the Bottle – a good country feel which makes you want to dance; Love and Hate – one of the slower songs on the album, co-written with Ed Sheeran; and Half of my Hometown – which features nice harmonies from Kenny Chesney.
It may be more Taylor Swift than Dolly Parton, but who cares? The guest stars have been used well, not added in the way some are – just to sell singles – and the mixture of a more poppy sound with some good 21st-century country makes for a very listenable album.
