On 9th April Ed Cosens – best known as guitarist and co-songwriter with British band Reverend & The Makers – releases his debut album, Fortunes Favour. The ten-track self-written record mixes, amongst other things, a little of Reverend & The Makers with a bit of Richard Hawley and some indie pop, to create a delightful album served with a Sheffield accent.
From The River and Last To Know – which wouldn’t be out of place sung by Richard Hawley – to the more Reverend & The Makers-sounding The Pantomime and Come On In, this album combines catchy lyrics with good tunes and great guitars, and – for those who still listen to albums in their prescribed order – a well-put-together/thought-out song order.
As a debut effort, albeit one from a seasoned musician, it’s a good album. If you like your music with an accent, a bit of an obvious English sound, or just enjoy your pop with an indie tinge, this is one for you to check out.
