Samantha Fish, graced The Glasgow Barrowland with an electrifying performance that left the audience wanting more, with her signature red-hot guitar skills and soulful voice, Fish teamed up with Jesse Dayton as they brought their Death Wish Blues tour to town.
Opening tonight’s gigs was special guests, The Commoners, a Toronto-based five-piece band bring their own blend of rock and roll, southern blues, and roots music. Their brief says – “The Commoners unite under a shared dream: to write, perform, and share music that is an authentic nod to the greats who paved the way before them” and wow don’t they do just that, we hear The Black Crowes, Led Zepplin, and Marcus King all over their set. Visually, their stage presence matches their massive sound, and this turns out to be a great opening gig, warming the Glasgow crowd up for what is to follow. Definitely keep your eyes and ears open for these guys in the future.
With Scotland still recovering from Storm Babet and travel still somewhat disrupted, the Barrowland floor was a little bit sparser that normal, however as the main event kicked off with the killer “Kick out the Jams” there was no doubt the crowd were pleased to be there. Next up was the tour’s signature “Deathwish” rapidly followed by a blistering cover of Little Junior’s Blue Flame’s “Feelin’ Good”
Fish’s versatility was on full display as she effortlessly switched between scorching electric blues and heartfelt acoustic ballads. Songs like her outstanding cover of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins classic “I put a spell on you” showcased her prowess and vocal depth, while her face-melting guitar solos left the audience in awe.
After whipping the crowd up, they bravely flip to a short acoustic halfway through the set. This might have broken the flow of the night; however, we needn’t have feared. Jesse relayed a short story of when he and Fish first started recording, and the discovery that they both have a mutual love of Townes Van Zandt before they proceed to a stunning acoustic cover of “I’ll Be Here In The Morning”
The two musician’s styles come together to create something more than the sum of the parts, they complement each other perfectly and the joy of playing together comes across loud and clear. Plenty of guitar duels and question and answer riffs kept the Glasgow crowd more than amused.
It’s great to see Samantha Fish playing larger venues each time she returns to the city, look out for her next time she is in town, you won’t be disappointed.
