Christine and the Queens has surprise released a new EP, Joseph, featuring two new songs performed during her appearance at Global Citizen Live last weekend. The songs are cover versions of George Michael’s “Freedom” and “Comme l’oiseau” by Michel Fugain & Le Big Bazar. Alongside the covers, Christine also performed new arrangements of past hits “Tilted,” “People i’ve been sad” and “Doesn’t matter” in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris for Global Citizen Live. The full performance is now available to watch on YouTube.

Global Citizen Live took place on September 25 with events in Lagos, Paris, New York City and more. Across six continents, artists helped rally citizens in demanding that governments, major corporations, and philanthropists work together to defend the planet and defeat poverty by focusing on the most urgent, interrelated threats hitting those in poverty the hardest – climate change, vaccine equity, and famine.

Joseph follows Christine and the Queens’ February 2020 La vita nuova EP and short film, imagined by Christine and featuring the EP’s five new songs in as many sequences. The 14 minute film is an inward journey that sees the artist invest Opéra Garnier, the world famous Paris opera house, filling it with stories of ghosts and mythical creatures. Through the lens of long-time collaborator Colin Solal Cardo (Robyn, Charli XCX) and with choreography by Ryan Heffington (VMA Award 2014, Grammy Award nominated), Christine and her dancers appear in succession on the Opéra rooftop, its grand stage and most secret recesses, culminating into a feverish moment with Caroline Polachek, a collaborator on the EP’s title track. The EP was acclaimed everywhere from Vogue to NME to the Sunday Times, and lead single ‘People, I’ve been sad’ has since been named one of the year’s best songs by Time Magazine, NPR, Billboard and i-D.  Later in the year, she released a new song titled “Eyes of a child” for the Amazon Prime Video series Hanna and covered Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m On Fire.” She also worked with French band Indochine to rework their track “3e sexe” into the updated “3SEX.”
