Courtney Marie Andrews – Old Flowers – Album Review

This album about break-ups and heartbreak is Courtney Marie Andrews’ seventh, and one that deserves a listen.  Andrews has created an album of songs to which everyone can relate at least once.  Her talents as a songwriter are showcased beautifully and, should you wish to check out a couple of the songs before you decide on purchasing, Guilty, Break the Spell, and It Must Be Someone Else’s Fault would be good choices.

This record has a feeling of familiarity to it, like a book you’ve read many times.  Even on the first play, something draws you in, making you want to listen again, and at 41 minutes it’s easy to stick on repeat.  There’s something of Tift Merritt, Nancy Griffiths, Diane Birch and Gregory Alan Isakov on this album – be it an odd bar on the piano, a lyric, or the sound of the mellotron or saw played on a few of the tracks.

The simplicity of the vocals, beautifully written songs and great talent on the many instruments played on this album make it one to check out.
