BADLY DRAWN BOY BANANA SKIN SHOES Out Now – PCN Album Review

BADLY DRAWN BOY

BANANA SKIN SHOES

Out Now

BADLY DRAWN BOY or, to give him his Sunday name, Damon Gough has been posted AWOL for the longest time but he is back with a new album and with renewed vigour.

He goes about dismantling the past decade of his personal life; the traumas and turmoils. He does so with the intelligence we’ve come to expect from him before life demanded its pound of flesh and Badly Drawn Boy disappeared for a while.

‘BANANA SKIN SHOES’ has been put together by a band of producers and the sum of the parts is an album worth listening to.

There are jazz influences produced in a lo-fi style over old AKAI sampler style samples of funk horns and 8 bit beats. We are treated a retro style which reminds the older listener of big Afros and Cuban heels over which garish flares move in time to the beats. Synth glitches beeps and 80’s flavoured flutes make appearances to compliment where and when required.

‘Never Change’ is a piano-led ballad whilst ‘Colours’ takes the listener to the world of early synth-pop. Such is the variety of sound, feeling and vibes.

The title song ‘Banana Skin Shoes’ will capture you in a world of Harlem inspired funk for just short of 3 minutes. Close your eyes and imagine the smokey whisky joint and let yourself go with it… it’s lo-fi and gritty; it’s simplistic in word but excellently executed in sound.
