Edinburgh-based musician Katherine Aly has shared her stunning new electro-pop single, FREUD [for the mama’s boy] – a catchy and relatable track that perfectly captures the mood of the modern dating scene.

Out now, the playful yet powerful song comes from the perspective of a woman trying to unpick a recent relationship, and boasts clever storytelling lyrics, synth layers and sequences, alongside bold, pulsating hooks that listeners won’t be able to get out of their head. In short, the sexy and seductive single begs to be played on repeat.

Heavily influenced by the likes of Billie Eilish, Self-Esteem and Chapelle Roan, Katherine’s skillful songwriting comes into its own on the track, which she admits flowed out of her during the writing and recording process at home studios in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

“This song was one of my easiest to write,” explained Greece-born Katherine, who describes her music as a soundtrack of womanhood. “The track starts with a sound of flipping through pages and closing a book, concluding that Freud had a point about the Oedipus complex! It’s kind of a revelation for the woman who had to do some research having been involved with a man, who is not only unhealthily attached to his mother, but also undecided about whether he wants an exclusive relationship or not.

“The guy’s weird obsession to find someone ‘as good as mum’ to take care of him leads to the weary words from the woman’s perspective in the chorus – ‘I wanted peace, I wanted ease, someone to please’. The song is quite simple in its structure – a one-chord banger, you might say – with emphasis on the rhythm and hooks.”

Known for her genre-defying sound, the new single comes after a stellar few years for singer-songwriter Katherine, who has been championed by the likes of Vogue Italia, Canal+, Clash Magazine, The Scotsman, and Amazing Radio. Funded by Creative Scotland, her debut album, Shadows Are Made Of Light Too, was released in 2022, and received a nomination for Album of the Year at The Weekender Magazine Awards. In 2022, Katherine was also part of the Wide Days Talent Development programme.

With more captivating, energetic and confrontational releases still to come, 2024 looks set to be a big year for the rising star.
