It’s completely understandable that many might wonder about the modern day significance of psychedelic rock compared to its ’60’s roots.

We’ve all seen the history of the ’67 ‘Summer of Love’ and the 1969 ‘Woodstock’ events, but to channel youself into this genre of music in today’s world is a challenging aim.

However, while The Doors might be seen as the ‘true roots of psychedelic rock’, there are now more modern versions of these historic genres.

Outfits like Homeshake and TOBACCOA (let’s not forget Tame Impala) are embracing this internet age with their versions of this romantic history. And very popular too.

So hats off to Gerald James, aka JOG, and his debut EP release ‘Driftwood’.

Driftwood is the four track EP, released on Sun Turtle Records, which showcases JOG’s musical prowess on this, his first release. Recorded to tape by David McAulay (King Creosote, Mogwai) and mastered by Joseph Carra (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard), it hits the modern psych-rock spot.

Yesterday’s Mallet, track two, is an exellent song. JOG provides all the instruments here and the haunting, mesmorising rhythm, has elements of classic MTV Nirvana Unplugged at their best (for those who actually remember the 90’s).

The opening riff of I Won’t Look works perfectly. It builds to the best track of the EP. Beautifully contructed, in modern terms we should be waving our vape in the air to this.

Karbon Copy, track four, gives an indication of the future. Annabel guests on vocals; hers and Gerald’s vocals blend beautifully. Funk and positivity!!

An EP release is great, and I’ve written about this before. It is a great way for an introduction to a new band for the listener, and for the artist a wonderful way to test the water. I always embrace these. But, for this release, I have much bigger hopes for the future.

The official launch of ‘Driftwood’, is on Saturday May 11th 2019 at The Tartan Suite, Kilmarnock.
