Evans McRae – Only Skin – Album Review

On 21st May ‘21 Evans McRae – a new venture from songwriters Lowri Evans and Tom McRae – released their debut album Only Skin.  The 45-minute 11-track album mixes beautiful melodies, lovely harmonies and great musicians.

The songs on the album range from soft piano numbers to heavier ones with ‘80s jazz trumpet.  Evans McRae have managed to find a way to mix their voices in a beautiful way, producing an album which not only showcases their range of vocal talents but finds a way to include a multitude of musical styles.  You can hear many of their influences in the tracks, but sometimes they are so slight/fleeting it’s hard to tell after a few listens if the familiarity you have for certain passages is actually not due to having listened so many times.

Whilst there are no weak tracks on this album, Careful, Merry Christmas My Darling (Drink Up) and Sleep With One Eye Open are those you should check out first if you have limited time – who can say no to a Welsh male voice choir on backing vocals?  This is a great album that gets better with every listen and will sound even better when played live – we can just hope a tour comes to fruition.

Only Skin is now available digitally, with physical copies released on 18 June.
