Glasgow rockers Mason Hill storm into Sauchiehall Street’s The Garage

MASON HILL perform at The Garage , Glasgow on Saturday 3rd Sept 2021

Glasgow rockers Mason Hill stormed into Sauchiehall Street’s The Garage and gave their ever-growing band of followers a service they were long overdue.  Running through a setlist comprising tracks from the recently released debut album, and a Foo Fighters cover thrown in for good measure, the audience was treated to a couple of hours of great rock music, from the first chords of support Hollowstar to the yells of the bouncers to make your way to the exits after the lights go up again.

Tour support act Hollowstar hail from Cambridgeshire, and were formed in 2015 by brothers Joe and Jack Bonson, on bass and drums respectively.  Aided by guitarists Tom Collett and Phil Haines, the band played a number of tracks such as “Take It All”, “Invincible”, “Money” and “All I Gotta Say” which were all taken from their self-titled debut album, released in 2019.  The highlight of their short set was a fabulous cover of the Free classic “Wishing Well”, with a reworked intro of “500 Miles” by The Proclaimers.  Anything to get the Scottish audience on their toes!  The band was well received and made way for the main act.

Mason Hill are Scott Taylor (Lead Vocals), James Bird (Lead Guitar), Marc Montgomery (Guitar), Matthew Ward (Bass), and Craig McFetridge (Drums) and was formed after Bird and Taylor met at school, aged 14.  Adding the three others, they completed the band in 2013 and honed their talents playing gigs around the UK, supporting major names such as Graham Bonnet, Gun, and The Dan Reed Network.  Having recently released their debut album ‘Against The Wall’, 2021 sees the band embark on their first headline tour of the UK, with several shows having the sold-out signs up already.

A much-anticipated homecoming gig, the audience was at fever pitch when the lights went down and the opening bars of “Reborn” filled the air.  Craig on drums was first to take to the stage to a rapturous welcome, closely followed by the rest of the band, with frontman Taylor bringing up the rear.  Bursting into “No Regret”, “DNA” and “Out of Reach”, they could do no wrong in the eyes of the fans.  Their brand of hard rock was music to the ears of the sell-out Glasgow crowd.

The setlist tonight comprises tracks from the impressive album ‘Against The Wall’, and showcased the guitar talents of Ward, Bird, and Montgomery, with bass lines, power chords and guitar solos Slash would be proud of and drumming by McFetridge as if his life depended on it.  Coupled with the superb vocals by Scott Taylor and you have a band at the top of their game.  Carrying on with the setlist, “Find My Way”, “Broken Son” and an audacious, but the well-done performance of The Foo Fighters classic “Best Of You”, with added crowd participation from the Freddie Mercury School of crowd control nearly lifting the roof off the old venue, leaving early number “Now You See Me”, the storming title track from the album “Against The Wall“, and “Where I Belong”, dedicated to a band members sister to close the evening, as the happy throng disappeared off into the Glasgow sunset.

This was a fantastic return to live music in Glasgow after 18 months of lockdown restrictions.  We haven’t seen the end of the virus by any means but if we all stay sensible and safe, then nights like this will be back for good.  A great old venue with a long history in the Glasgow music scene, two great bands playing great music, Mason Hill are very talented guys who are going places and this is a show not to be missed.  A great night out at The Garage, and not an MOT in sight!!
