Harvey Sutherland today presents the ‘Deluxe’ edition of acclaimed debut Boy, including a full suite of remixes such as versions from Adrian Sherwood (On-U Sound), I. JORDAN (Ninja Tune), Martyn Bootyspoon (Local Action). The version also features newly released reworks of beloved single ‘Type A’ from Melbourne-based globetrotter DJ Plead and Aoeteroa dance-punk Vanessa Worm, plus a special DJ-friendly ‘Sutherland Club Mix’ heard only in his live sets.
Harvey Sutherland’s debut album Boy has garnered widespread acclaim since its release in April, with Resident Advisor stating “Katz’s sense of musicality has always been head and shoulders above his peers…his songs are full-blooded and fleshed-out, a collection of irresistible disco and funk with clever turns of phrase and killer grooves”. The album was nominated for the Australian Music Prize and peaked at #2 Dance Album, #5 Vinyl Album and #10 Australian Album on the ARIA charts. The record has received widespread radio support and was featured in NPR’s‘Favorite Albums of 2022 (So Far)’ list. Harvey has since completed a comprehensive tour in his native Australia in support of the album, including two sold out shows at Melbourne Recital Hall as part of RISING festival.
In addition to previously released remixes from Adrian Sherwood, I. JORDAN and Martyn Bootyspoon, this new suite of remixes sees DJ Plead (Livity Sound, SUMAC) turn in a thrilling flip. On this club-focused reimagining, his trademark heady drum programming dovetailing with the scuzzy bassline of the original. ‘sos’ of Melbourne art-punks CLAMMappears only briefly – Jarred grinds his deadpan vocal down to angel dust. The DJ Plead Remix will appear on a special limited Japanese 7”, backed with the Adrian Sherwood ‘Pure Enjoyment Dub’ of lead single ‘Jouissance’, through Amidst Records / Disk Union in September 2022.
Aoeteroa dance-punk figurehead Vanessa Worm builds a new world inside Sutherland’s janky motorik groove, adding her own lyrics, harmonies and vocal synthesis to create an unholy duet. The track is filtered and flipped in her singular style, a raw and unhinged rework from the Optimo Music affiliate. The remixes have received early club support from Erol Alkan, Laurent Garnier, Optimo, Jennifer Cardini and Roy Mills.
