Several Precious Moments with Ted Nugent – The Motor City Madman!
By: Ralph Fitzgerald – PCN, Managing Editor North America
PCN – Ted who are your musical influences? And what or who shaped your musical career ?
TED – I was born in that magical time when Les Paul electrified the guitar and was instantly imprinted by the outrageous sonic bombast. I have been deeply touched by the black soul and R&B masters like Chuck Berry, Bo Diddly, Little Richard, all things Motown, Elvis and his incredible band, James Brown, Wilson Picket, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, BB King, Freddie King, Albert King and so many classic musical innovators. Listen to Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels song, “Jenny Take A Ride”. Listen to The Amboy Dukes, early Bob Seger, MC5, Grand Funk Railroad, Kid Rock. Michigan rockers absorbed all the intensity of Motown soul, kicked it up to a fiery high energy because we so love the music and push ourselves to the limit. There is no music more powerful, soulful, intense and driving than MotorCity rock. The musical authority of all things Motown guided us powerfully.
PCN – Other than yourself, who do you think is the best guitarist you have ever heard or seen and why?
TED – This wonderful world is wall to wall killer guitarmasters and I love and adore them all. Beck, Page, Clapton, Brian May, Eddie Van Halen, Billy Gibbons, Angus Young, Derek St. Holmes, Rickey Medlocke, BB, Freddie, Albert and so many others are full on musical animals and I join music lovers everywhere in thanking and saluting them for bringing such infectious fire and attitude to our beloved American rock-n-roll music.
PCN – With over 5 decades of rocking the world with some of the greatest rock and roll music, What keeps Ted Nugent going and why?
TED – I crave life and am dedicated to maximize every breath I take! I live 100% pure, raw, uninhibited, and brutally honest in everything I do and love it all beyond words.
PCN – If you could record an album or song with any other artist, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
TED – James Brown! He so embodied not just a fiery passionate musical authority but maximized it with the ultimate American work ethic! We would do his “I FEEL GOOD” and my “Wang Dang Sweet Poontang”!
PCN – How do you see the state of Rock N Roll today? Is it in good hands going into the Future?
TED – All the greatest rockers are still out here rocking like animals every year and real music lovers continue to support us! The indefatigable celebration of killer music by me and my band, Sammy Hagar, Aerosmith, Heart, Cheap Trick, ZZ Top, Foreigner, John Fogerty, Van Halen, Styx, REO, Journey, Kid Rock, AC-DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Chili Peppers, Kid Rock, the Foo Fighters and so many honest to God soulful musicians carrying on, the best music in the world is alive and well. My current favorite is Bruno Mars and his insane grinding, grooving band.
PCN – At the YOUNG age of 70, Do you ever think you will retire from the music business, and look into politics? Ted Nugent for President 2024??
TED – I am 71 this year! YIKES! But I still love the music, love performing, love my band and crew, love my songs, love playing guitar, love my audiences and still have insane animal energy. I currently perform the most important political duties an American has the responsibility to perform–I experiment in self-government on a daily basis, fulfilling my “we the people” duties to monitor and guide our elected employees to adhere to their oath to the US Constitution and demand accountability from them. That is the purest form of freedom politics in the world and I am dutybound to turn up the heat constantly. After all, we finally have The Great White Buffalo in the White House so things are looking very America First these days!
PCN – Thank you Ted.
