Jake Shears has today premiered a Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs remix of new single, ‘Do The Television’. It’s Jake’s first new music of 2021 and follows last year’s widely acclaimed ‘Meltdown’ (as well as his much-loved appearance on ITV’s smash hit show, ‘The Masked Singer’). Jake Shears is currently working on a brand new solo album, having also recently reunited with Boys Noize on his own recent single, ‘All I Want’ (out now on Defected) and invested in The Q: a hotly-anticipated new queer nightclub in Times Square, founded by Franki Sharpe and Alan Picus (with fellow investors Billy Porter, Zachary Quinto and Charlie Carver).
Inspired by mid-era Bowie, Lionel Richie, and (says Jake) “language and the loss of meaning”, ‘Do The Television’ is given a new twist today by Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – “one of my favourite artists of all time, and a wonderful friend over the years. He managed to make something more bonkers than I even imagined. I fucking love this mixes.” TEED, meanwhile, comments: “Jake and I became friends in Kuala Lumpur about 9 years ago. We had a drink after a festival and I remember some mickey mouse ears being passed around. It’s a pleasure to remix one of his brilliant songs.”
The idea for ‘Do The Television’ first emerged when Jake was writing Scissor Sisters’ third album, ‘Night Work’ (which has been widely hailed since as the band’s most subversive, trailblazing work). As the project turned 10 in 2020, Jake was inspired to reflect, rewrite and finally ‘Do The Television’ from scratch. What’s emerged is an instant-classic amidst Jakes Shears’ formidable catalogue, a dancefloor anthem both totally of the moment and in its own, wickedly strange world.
Jake Shears is a multi-platinum-selling, Brit-Award-winning and Grammy-nominated artist who has helped shape the musical landscape as we now know it. Since Scissor Sisters’ hiatus, Shears has written an acclaimed memoir (‘Boys Keep Swinging’), performed on Broadway (in the lead role of ‘Kinky Boots’), composed for the stage (‘Tales Of The City’) and collaborated with the likes of Josh Homme, Kylie Minogue and Nile Rodgers. Jake Shears’ self-titled debut solo album, inspired in large part by his move to New Orleans, was released to widespread critical acclaim and his first solo tour in 2018 (he subsequently performed at the historic WorldPride closing ceremony in New York to mark Stonewall 50). With ‘Meltdown’ and ‘Do The Television’ introducing – as Shears puts it – more of that “Sinister Dystopian Dance Pop” to come, Jake’s Renaissance Man status continues on his wider projects: he is also working with Elton John and British playwright James Graham on a musical about Tammy Faye Bakker, the TV evangelist who was known for her unusual warmth towards the LGBT community.
