(May 28, 2021) Today, Kele (Kele Okereke) has shared his fifth solo studio album The Waves Pt. 1 alongside new track ‘The Wave We Live Now’, out now via his own label, KOLA Records / !K7.
New track ‘The Way We Live Now’ is the fifth single to be taken from The Waves Pt. 1, following on from ‘The Heart Of The Wave’ and its accompanying visual, exquisitely shot by director Jack Chute whose previous work includes sculptor Sir Antony Gormley OBE and figurative sculptor and hyper-realist artist Matthew Penn; Kele’s stunning cover of Bronski Beat’s ‘Smalltown Boy’ that accompanied the announcement of the album; and the recently tracks ‘Nineveh’ and ‘From A Place Of Love’.
On making the album in lockdown, Kele says, “What became clear was that I still had the desire to create. Usually when I make records it’s an ensemble affair, there are usually lots of other musicians and singers I work with, but as we were in lockdown I did not have that luxury of being able to work with other musicians. I knew I had to fill in the space of this record entirely by myself, which was daunting but also very liberating. This album is literally the sound of me. The initial plan was that the record was going to be solely instrumental. Slowly I started adding words and vocal melodies to the ideas and I could see songs starting to take shape but it was important to me that the music felt fluid, that it drifted in out like the bobbing of waves, that if you let yourself succumb to it maybe it could take you somewhere else, somewhere far away from here.”
The Waves Pt. 1 is arguably Kele’s first truly ‘solo’ record. The forced solitude of lockdown gave Kele Okereke the chance to create a record entirely on his own. A record that draws influence from film scores and classical music – music without lyrics that he sought solace in, alongside a fascination with mixing pop songs with longer, more meditative passages. That meditative connection travels throughout The Waves Pt. 1 alongside a kinetic connection as he describes his daily nighttime walks around London as “transformative”, allowing him the time and space to listen back to the music he’d created that day. The ritual of these daytime creations into nighttime critiques rolled back and forth like waves, throughout lockdown, informing the album’s title.
