After opening for Coldplay on their recent stadium tour, Glasgow’s Chvrches return to the familiar and intimate surroundings of Glasgow’s hallowed Barrowland Ballroom, filling the place to capacity for two nights on the 10th and 11th of June.

Opening the night was Glasgow’s own Indie rock four-piece Dead Pony, comprising of Anna Shields Blair Crichton, Liam Adams, Aidan McAllister. The band took to the stage fired with energy, passion, and confidence, with Shields owning the stage from the get-go. Strong vocals, energetic guitar riffs paired with thumping bass and drums won the home crowd over in seconds. Make sure you catch them later in the year with their own headline show at St Luke’s on the 8th of September.

With the Barrowland crowd suitably fired up and ready, Chvches build the tension just that little bit further with a five-minute-long intro. The band take to the stage with the ever popular “He Said She Said” and the crowd are lapping it up.

Lauren Mayberry is dressed in a glitzy affair reminiscent of a New York 50’s party, immediately setting off across the stage with her famous spins and twists, the Barrowland is literally “whooping” in appreciation.

“In the toon on a Saturday night” shouts Mayberry, before tearing into the melodic Forever as she spins off across the stage again.

Hidden from the view of most of the crowd, is a fan on the barrier dressed as a giant Gregg’s sausage roll, it catches the bands attention and becomes the focus of many a joke. Martin Doherty adds to the joke by playing the opening bars of Coldplay’s Clocks several times, until told to stop.

The show is not only musically perfect with an expertly curated setlist, but also visually stunning with simple projected graphics.

We are taken on a journey, mostly though the more recent catalogue, as the band get to the end of the “Screen Violence” tour, before drawing the main part of the set to a close with the anthemic “Never Say Die”.

After a short break the band return with Mayberry having made a costume change, now dressed more simply in a T-shirt.  With her outstretched arms and drenched in fake blood, we are treated to a three-song encore of “Asking for a friend”, “The Mother We Share” before calling a close on the evening with “Clearest Blue”
