No Songs Tomorrow – 60 track 4CD Boxset chronicling Darkwave

Cherry Red Records have just released a 4-disc 60 track box set documenting what has popularly become known as Darkwave. In old money that’s what most people would have termed Goth, including as it does artists such as The Cure, Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Cranes, Danse Society and Xmal Deutschland.

There are some of those big names included on this collection, but the interest lies much more in the more obscure tracks. Pretty much all of the tracks featured were released in the mid to late 80s, in fact the youngest cut featured is a mere baby at 26 years old in Tones On Tail’s 7″ mix of Performance, from 1998.

So this is not a collection designed to bring you up to date with the current scene, more one to trace the development and history. With any sprawling body of work like this, there will always be some stand out tracks you’ve never heard before, and some that just don’t float your boat. It’s a veritable electro-goth pix n’ mix. Of course there are the identikit flanged sub-Cure bass lines, bright synths and perfunctory drum machines littered throughout as is befitting of the time, but the rewards are there to be had though as you uncover some real nuggets. Stand out tracks include Invisible LimitsDemand For Supply, Black Tape For A Blue Girl Within These Walls, PsycheThe Crawler and Requiem In WhiteA Prodigal Son.

With over 4 hours of music you’re bound to find something new to you.

Of course there are notable absences, no Sisters Of Mercy, Bauhaus, or The Mission, but it’s good to see Soft Cell included. Plenty of torch songs and Teutonic coldness on display too. Special mention must go to Rise And Fall Of A Decade’s “Nothing To Say, Easy To Answer”, which sounds like Morrissey if he’d discovered black eyeliner and self harm rather than finding Sandie Shaw and Johnny Marr.

The collection comes with a beautifully detailed 28 page booklet full of pictures and sleeve notes from each release.
