‘OUTSIDER’ album feat. Adam Glover & Hannah Peel inspired by celebrated outsider artist Henry Darger

Philippe Cohen Solal (Gotan Project) and Mike Lindsay(Tunng) continue their audio, visual and digital exploration of America’s most celebrated Outsider artist Henry Darger, by today sharing the next instalment of the project with the stunning, panoramic official video for “Onward In The Fight” featuring Adam Glover & Hannah Peel, taken from the critically acclaimed album ‘Outsider’.  Watch HERE.

Created by Gabriel Jacquel, the new ‘Onward..’ video is inspired by Henry Darger’s 15000 page novel,  The Story of the Vivian Girls in the Realms of the Unreal, where he describes the courageous little girls’ battle against adults who want to enslave them. The Vivian girls are at the heart of this new animation video, which sees one of the heroines ride across the wide plain followed by friends and family on horses to face a powerful army.

Philippe Cohen Solal says, “Henry Darger was not only an awesome visual artist, but also a prolific writer. Onward In The Fight should give us the courage to confront obscure forces. Onward!”

Outsider will also have its own 7 part podcast ‘Outsider: The Amazing Story Of Henry Darger’ launching on 12th Aprilon Henry Darger’s birthday. It will be presented by Philippe and Mike, who will go an audio adventure exploring Henry Darger’s life in conversation with scholars, artists and international art curators.

The adventure into Darger’s life is explored further by the official websiteoutsideronline.co, which is presented as an animated flip book, including a teaser of the new podcast series and will be the most comprehensive gathering of Darger’s work online, with an interactive map connecting the collections of international museums Intuit Art Center Chicago, Moma NYC and Musee d’art Moderne, Paris.

OUTSIDER, released last month on ¡Ya Basta! Records has received an array of media support since its release from Apple Music, plays on BBC 6Music, BBC Radio 4 ‘Loose Ends’, Soho Radio, plus press support from Louder Than War, Artylst, XS Noize, RNR Magazine and more.  It is an album of lush, twisted 1950s/60s Americana with stunning, vintage analogue instrumentation that transports the listener into panoramic realms, gifting incredible instant-classic songs such as Who Will Follow Angelinia’, ‘Hark Hark’, ‘Bring Them In’, ‘Can A Boy Forget His Mother?’, ‘851 Webster Avenue’ and ‘Scattering The Fierce Foeman’.

Mixed by Grammy-award winning Andrew Scheps (Adele, Beyonce, Lana Del Rey), Solal and Lindsay co-wrote and co-produced all the tracks.  The album is a musical and visual extrapolation of Darger, his obsession with the weather, tormented Christian faith, deceptively naive paintings and lyrics to songs, written over 50 years ago but never before been set to music. Darger was a reclusive hospital janitor, whose epic fantasy novels and visual artwork set the art world aflame upon its posthumous discovery. Darger admirers include artists Grayson Perry, the Chapman brothers and musicians like Nick Cave, David Byrne, Sufjan Stevens and Devendra Banhart.

OUTSIDER has been five years in the making and the brainchild of Philippe Cohen Solal, the million-selling artist, producer and composer who co-founded Gotan Project. Solal has been given exclusive, unprecedented access to Henry Darger’s estate comprising lyrics, poems and visual art and has brought together an epic collaboration with Mike Lindsay from acid folk group Tunng, Hannah Peel and the vocals of Adam Glover.
