Wilder Maker frontman Gabriel Birnbaum releases 4-Track Album ‘Nightwater’

Gabriel Birnbaum releases new album Nightwater

Hi all. I released my new album, ‘Nightwater’, which is a mellow, smeared, dreamy collection of 4-track instrumentals I’ve been making over the last 5-6 weeks. Initially it was a response to election stress, a way to soothe myself instead of ratcheting up anxiety online. Obviously, in the time since then the practice has only gotten more valuable.

Rather than hang onto this music in the hopes of creating some kind of career advance when it comes out in two years, it makes sense to me to share it immediately. It’s a very relaxing record, and I think it might be able to be of some use to people now in this stressful time. I’d love for it to be functional music.

This has been a clarifying time for me, in a way, about how little you get by playing along with the music industry at the moment, even when you “win.” My friends are all in various states of precarity, no matter their success, and I know many of you are too. It feels like a good time to reconsider some of the basic rules of the industry, to be less strategic.

For now, the music is available as a pay-what-you-can download, only on bandcamp: https://gabrielbirnbaum.bandcamp.com/album/nightwater

My other calming practice over the last year or two has been linocut printmaking, and I have decided that the physical version of this album will be a 12” x 12” print. The first edition, limited to 25 handmade prints in dark blue ink on cream colored Rives paper, is available now on bandcamp. It will ship as soon as it’s safe to do so.

Here’s what they look like:

Hope you’re all staying as safe and sane as possible. I’d love to hear back from you if you enjoy the record, or any of what I wrote here resonates. Obviously this is a press release, and I want people to find out about the record, so I’d love it if anyone shared the news or wrote about the record or played it on the radio, but you are also all my colleagues as a publicist and part of this is just me wanting to share some music and thoughts with you.

best,
gabe
