HANDS OFF GRETEL

THE ANGRY EP

RELEASE DATE – 6th March

REVIEW / WORDS : John Brown

Let’s state from the outset…

this EP demands to be played loud!

There are very few bands that can give us the angst of Hands off Gretel and still produce a good melody; an accomplished sound that is raw; songs with a message that still entertain. Hands off Gretel give this and then some.

The Angry EP is a showcase of 3 songs that have been played live and now deserve a recorded platform. 3 songs that didn’t make the last album but are good enough to stand on merit.

Bigger Than Me

There are loads of lung busting guttural screams from Lauren Tate as you’d expect but her vocal versatility is outstanding and is on show throughout the three song EP. Her ability to run the listener through a gamut of aural experiences and emotions has never been in doubt but this is no one person show.

The abilities of Becky Baldwin on bass, Sean Bon on guitar and Sam Hobbins on the drums make for exceptional all round musicianship with each member commanding their own space on the recording. Where do Hands off Gretel come from – besides Barnsley? Well, there is an element of many great and good artists running through the sound. Greats such as Nirvana, Hole, Gwen Stefani / No Doubt all intertwined with their own brand of pop sensibility and rage.

From the very first note until the last the listener is left in no doubt that there is anger and passion in this EP but there is also soul searching and questions being asked if you are willing to listen. If vexatious poetry and social justice is your thing you won’t be left disappointed with the latest offering; if not then take the package as a whole and just listen to a wall of sound. A well mixed and mastered wall of sound within which musicianship and amazing vocals smack you on the face and demands that you turn the volume as high as it goes.

So, in short – get your hands on the EP, turn the volume up to ASBO level, strap yourself in and take an angry ride to destination Hands off Gretel.

The EP will be available on CD and as a limited edition 10” white vinyl (wrapped in the unmistakeable artwork of Lauren Tate) alongside the usual download sites.
