Goo Goo Dolls – Rarities – Album Review

The latest release from the Goo Goo Dolls is Rarities – a collection of b-sides, live recordings, remixes and the odd cover.  So – to quote that old adage – “it does what it says on the tin”.

Starting with two early b-sides, you are taken back to the ‘90s and their less-finessed sound. They are songs which grow on you the more you listen to them and you can hear the promise of the band.

Following on from these is a remix and a live track from A Boy Named Goo. The remix is good, but I’m not sure how much difference the average fan would hear.  The live version of Name isn’t bad, but from here the album goes into fan-only territory.  The acoustic and recorded live versions of some of the band’s bigger hits – whilst interesting and likely to be a draw for those who want to hear everything the Goo Goo Dolls have ever recorded – seem they would hold little pull for the casual fan.  The versions aren’t bad but you find yourself missing the drama of the original recordings – especially when it comes to Iris and Black Balloon.

If you’re a casual fan looking to get a compilation of the Goo Goo Dolls you would be best sticking with their 2007 Greatest Hits Volume One: The Singles, but if you crave to hear everything by your favourite band, then this is the album for you.

Rarities is out now on Warner Bros.
