SOFIE ROYER returns with new single + video ‘SCHWEDEN ESPRESSO’ ahead of playing The Great Escape next week

Sofie Royer, fka Sofie, today returns with new single and video ‘Schweden Espresso’ via Stones Throw. The multi-hyphenate singer-songwriter wrote the song about a bar of the same name that she frequents in her hometown of Vienna. She says: “it has served as a haunting backdrop for many a personal scene, regrettable and otherwise, being played out within the confines of its seasonally decorated walls.”

In the video created by cult filmmaker Eugene Kotlyarenko (Spree, Wobble Palace), Sofie dances, plays the slots, and…gets married in Vegas. Eugene and Sofie hadn’t planned that part of the video but spontaneously ended up tying the knot while filming. Eugene describes it as “in a way, the greatest wedding video in the world.”

He adds: “When they talk about making art that’s personal, this is about as personal as it gets. Over three days of running around Vegas with Sofie, we came, we shot, and we conquered. Shooting 20 hours a day, 3 days straight, was more energizing than exhausting. All the gambling and eating and smoking and drinking and waiting to get a wedding license was more bacchanal than banal. Filming right before and after our marriage ceremony was more celebration than plan.”

“I was consistently inspired by Sofie’s performative spirit, impressed with how far she was willing to go, and surprised that no one ever stopped us in these incredible Vegas locales. Maybe it was because we shot in the midst of Covid or maybe it’s because Sofie exudes a palpable superstar energy that seems beyond questioning. Whatever it was, I think the two of us captured shots and moments that would be impossible to get with a big crew. I think this swooping, elegiac song demanded a filmmaking style that was equally epic and personal. Of course, Sofie’s resonant lyrics proved prophetic and often moved me to tears while I edited this memory of our short but sweet time together. So while the marriage is over, we’ll always have ‘Schweden Espresso’!”

‘Schweden Espresso’ follows Sofie Royer’s debut album Cult Survivor on Stones Throw, and her recent feature on Toro Y Moi’s brand new album MAHAL on Dead Oceans. She will be supporting Lewis OfMan at La Cigale, Paris this Thursday 5 May, and will be performing at Lates Music Bar at The Great Escape Festival, Brighton on 12 and 13 May. Keep your eyes peeled for more music this summer.
