Emerging new Glasgow band Julia’s Bureau have announced their debut single ‘Signature Look’ on HIYA LOVE REcordings. A slinking, hook-laden track that draws inspiration from the likes of The Breeders and Television in its intricate guitar work and wry, laid-back vocals.

Formed in 2020, Julia’s Bureau is comprised of Euan Davidson (guitar, vocals), Tom Gilbert (guitar), Gav Murray (bass) and Jo Whitby (drums). With all the band members having previously played in grass roots bands and making music under various former guises, they bring a wealth of experience in songwriting and musicianship to their new venture.

‘Signature Look’ was recorded at Glasgow’s renowned Green Door Studio, and the track captures the warmth of the studio’s analogue set up, eschewing excessive overdubs or flourishes in favour of a natural sound that reflects the feel of the band’s live performances.

As vocalist and guitarist Euan Davidson explains, ‘Signature Look’ was written during Covid lockdown, and was inspired by a period of reflection when it felt like the world was crumbling: “It’s inspired by the sort of vague, fatalistic thoughts I was having – rather than being worried about my health, I was thinking about everything I had or hadn’t achieved in my life, and the vain, superficial boxes I felt like I needed to tick.

The lyrics are about really vain fatalism, the sort of turning 30 “What have I done with my life?” questions I was asking myself, but in the context of being locked in my old flat. It’s a lament to the time I felt like I was wasting, even though everyone was in the same boat.  I think a lot of folk can relate to being in that weird headspace over the last few years.”

‘Signature Look’ marks a compelling start for Julia’s Bureau, with the release of the single to be accompanied by a run of live shows in support of the new track.
