Out now on Fair Youth

“Emerging out of London’s reliable toilet circuit, Sam Akpro makes his debut with a loose and raw new song that explodes into life two-thirds of the way through. Snapping into shape, “Swan” goes out in a hailstorm of drums and eager anticipation of what comes next.” FADER

“A brand new voice to get very excited about! [..] he’s back with a brilliant, beautiful, beguiling piece of music called ‘Swan’” Matt Wilkinson – Apple Music

“Discovering someone called Sam Akpro is one of the best things I’ve done recently” Jack Saunders – BBC Radio 1

Introducing Sam Akpro with his new single ‘Drift’ alongside a video directed by Ethan & Tom.

‘Drift’ follows a teaser, soft release of his track ‘Swan’ a couple of weeks ago and the instant positive reaction that song received was remarkable. Radio support came in from notable alternative music tastemakers such as Apple Music’s Matt Wilkinson and BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders on his Future Sounds show, as well as key press nods from the likes of FADER and NME.

Where ‘Swan’ offered one side of Sam’s warped out, distorted sound with its eerie intro that breaks out into urgent frenetic drums, ‘Drift’ continues the path of offering something wholly unique and hugely atmospheric. An alternative indie gem that dips a toe in electronica, psychedelic rock and grunge all wrapped up with lo-fi punk sensibilities. Sam’s sound is a melting pot of influence exuberantly produced for a discerning modern ear – both tracks give insight into how genre bending Sam’s music is.

Born and bred in Peckham, South London, Sam Akpro had been working the London gig circuit until the pandemic took hold. However, the effort had already begun to pay off as he steadily built a cult fanbase, playing all manner of shows across London with his band, including a string of notorious free parties on Peckham Rye during summer 2020 and an infamous run of headline shows at The Windmill pub in Brixton, culminating in an impromptu 5-Star Review by The Times. Elsewhere, Sam has performed live at Flesh and Bone Studios session for NTS (previous guests include black midi, Steam Down, Tony Allen) and headlined Late at Tates @ Tate Britain.

With a sound as engaging as this and with the gigs back on the agenda, 2021 and beyond feel very promising for this young musician. Watch out for more music soon.
