SWG3, Scotland’s leading multi-discipline arts venue, has today announced the launch event to showcase BODYHEAT – a radical new system of capturing and transforming the enormous amounts of energy generated by people at SWG3’s gigs and clubs. This innovative new method of thermal control will drastically reduce the site’s energy usage, with potential savings of up to 70 tonnes of carbon per year.
Headlined by globally renowned DJ, producer, activist and fashion icon Honey Dijon, the project will launch during COP26 on Sunday 7th November during the New York Times Climate Hub take over at SWG3.
This pioneering BODYHEAT system will capture body heat from customers, visitors and staff before transporting it to a series of boreholes installed across the venue where it can be stored for days, weeks or even months. With 350K successfully raised for the first phase, SWG3 has the capacity to roll it out through the rest of the complex. Today’s launch announcement comes just days before the drilling programme begins on site, with a series of up to seventeen 150m – 200m boreholes set to be installed in the coming weeks. The system concept has been developed through collaboration with TownRock Energy geothermal energy consultants and Harley Haddow engineering consultants.
In an exclusive collaboration between fashion brand – Honey Fucking Dijon and SWG3, the launch event will also be showcasing a specially designed BODYHEAT t-shirt. As well as being for sale at SWG3, the limited-edition t-shirt will also be available across the Comme des Garçons founded Dover Street Market stores and DSM on-line.
Andrew Fleming-Brown, MD of SWG3, said: “It’s a very exciting time for us at SWG3 with work about to begin on the first phase of the innovative BODYHEAT project. We’re delighted to announce the launch party Honey Dijon and our special collaboration with her fashion brand for an exclusive BODYHEAT t-shirt. SWG3 hosted the first Comme des Garçons UK Guerrilla Store in 2006 so it feels like the perfect fit that the t-shirt will also be on sale at their DSM stores and online.”
Honey Dijon, said: “Anything we can do at this moment to help climate change is a positive thing. This new system of channelling energy from the dance floor is something innovative and sustainable. The inspiration and energy of the Paradise Garage is a fun way to exemplify how this system works and is reflected in the design of the SWG3 x honeyfuckingdijon colourful and vibrant t-shirt.”
As a reward for contributing to the heating and energy of SWG3, everyone who attends the BODYHEAT launch will be given Parley credits to spend on-site. Bringing together creators, thinkers and leaders, Parley collaborates on global innovative projects to help protect and preserve our oceans. Throughout COP26, SWG3’s Yard Life Gallery will be home to a Parley pop-up store, selling Parley limited-edition tote bags made with Ocean Plastic® – a premium material created from upcycled plastic waste recovered from remote islands, waters and coastlines by its global clean-up network. Along with Clean Waves – a new luxury eyewear collection created from marine plastic debris and reclaimed fishing nets – a key threat to sea turtles, whales, sharks and other marine life in the world’s oceans. 100% of proceeds go to projects that protect the ocean.
BODYHEAT is an inspiring radical project with the potential to significantly contribute towards the de-carbonisation of venues, leaving a legacy for years to come – not just in Scotland, but across the world.
