Lexi Berg’s four recent singles – ‘Into the Sea’, ‘Helpless To Help You’, ‘Midnight Sun’ and ‘Lonely World’ – have established Lexi as an exciting rising singer-songwriter destined for big things. Each release has taken her to a wider audience, with the support of Jo Whiley at Radio 2, a sync on ‘Love Island’, and constant presence across key streaming playlists and tastemaker media. A host of famous names have joined her growing fanbase, including Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Pinnock, Bianca Jagger, Amelia Windsor, Rebecca Ferguson and Ronan Farrow.
Now Lexi adds to a big year in her rise with today’s release of her debut EP ‘Empire of One’, which is out via EastWest Records / Warner Music UK. The EP compiles all of four of her recent singles alongside its new single and title track: ‘Empire of One’. Lexi also shares the new official video for the song. LISTEN HERE.
‘Empire of One’ offers a different feel to the rest of the EP. Lexi’s new song is a beautiful cocktail of enchanting melodies, dreamy as well as witty lyrics tinged with a mixture of melancholy and hope. The ethereal harmonies and sing-a-long choruses are original but also have the feeling of a long lost ABBA classic. Though the mood of ‘Empire of One’ is light and feel-good, Lexi wrote the song in January, on “blue Monday” the saddest day of the year. The lyrics turn loneliness and isolation into a strength and a source of joy. “I don’t need the club or the flashing lights,” she sings with conviction, “I’ll turn blue Mondays into Friday nights.”
“‘Empire of One’ is a song that celebrates our independence and imagination,” says Lexi. “Humans are remarkable in their creativity. All we need is our minds and some hope. I’d like this song to make the listener feel powerful on their own. You can be your own empire!”
The timeless ‘70s atmosphere of ‘Empire of One’ is reflected in the official video, which was directed by Ben McConnachie, and creates a deep sense of nostalgia. Captured on grainy, Super 8 film, the video compiles moments of Lexi’s life in the studio, wandering through the streets of London, and escaping into nature. The video takes us back in time before we got trapped in our digital worlds.
Lexi says that all the songs on her EP, ‘Empire of One’ are about “turning our individual experiences and emotions of loneliness and isolation into connection and strength. We forget when we feel alone, that so many of us feel the same way. ” The entire EP was recorded during lockdown, with Lexi’s collaborators including Jonathan Quarmby (Lewis Capaldi, James Arthur, Tom Walker), Wayne Hector (who has scored over thirty #1 hits for artists ranging from Carrie Underwood to One Direction), Jimmy Hogarth (Amy Winehouse, Paolo Nutini), Jim Eliot (Ellie Goulding, Foxes), solo artist Benjamin Francis Leftwich, and Sacha Skarbek (Miley Cyrus, Lana Del Rey).
Lexi Berg (full name Alexandra Berglöf) was born in Stockholm, Sweden and grew up on the sea, spending much of her childhood on a houseboat docked next-door to an amusement park. A trained classical pianist, Lexi’s talents also flourished as a vocalist in her early teens, prompting offers from labels who were eager to shape her as a future pop star. But after the suicide of a beloved uncle who lived with the family, she left for America, then Edinburgh and London, where she began to explore her own independent path as a songwriter and artist.
A turning point in her career came when she sent some early demos to Faris Badwan of The Horrors, which made such an impression that they recorded three tracks together, including ‘What If’. Lexi’s independent hustle – pitching directly to blogs and streaming services – landed her on Spotify and Apple Music playlists where she was picked up by sync companies, leading to ‘What If’ featuring on the soundtrack to the Netflix hit ‘Pieces Of A Woman’.
After returning to live shows this summer with sets at major festivals including the Isle of Wight and Wilderness, Lexi Berg will play a SOLD OUT headline show in London at The House of St. Barnabas on October 13th. Free tickets are still available for NHS workers.
