Tuk Smith & The Restless Hearts – Glorybound. New single on Gypsy Road Records
A rip roaring piece of old school rock n roll from the former Biters front man.
It seems that Nashville is becoming a hot bed of old skool rock and punk if this and Winona Fighter’s latest releases are anything to go by. You can kind of tell exactly what you’re going to get with Tuk Smith, just be looking at him. This is prime Wildhearts territory, a mash up of Thin Lizzy, Cheap Trick, Alice Cooper, Dead Boys, New York Dolls and even UK glam rock stalwarts Sweet and Slade. It’s a singalong, good time anthem rooted in the 70s and 80s. Tall and thin, long hair and impressive cheekbones, tattoos and Jack Daniel toting, he cuts an impressive figure and he’s assembled a mightily fine group of musicians in The Restless Hearts.
The song itself is a middle finger salute to all of his detractors, the haters and players who have slagged him off, but his resolve remains unaffected. Glorybound, to the top of the pile is his aim, and on this showing I can’t see any other destination.
Tuk elaborates on the inspiration behind the new song;
“This one’s for the underdogs, but It’s also written from a personal place. I got into rock ‘n roll and punk rock because it felt like a place for outsiders. I’ve never felt at home and music was a way for me to cope. This song is a reflection of the last decade, trying to stake my claim as an artist. It’s been an psychological game, an emotional game, and a spiritual game. You win some and you lose some, but you just keep going. You don’t really know why… But you just keep going.”
The track is accompanied by a decade long retrospective video, shot and directed by Video Rahim, compiled of new and old footage filled with Tuk‘s friends, fans, current and ex-band mates.
Tuk continues:
“For video b-roll, I went back to my hometown of Griffin, Georgia, including my high school that kept kicking me out and my dad’s gym where I used to hang off the exercise machines at four or five years old… My dad has owned and operated a completely independent gym that has survived against corporate controlled gyms for many, many years… still an inspiration to me.”
All of this points to a promising 2nd LP to follow later in the year
