Glasgow four-piece group Lo Rays have today released their new single ‘Algorithm Gods’, a pulsing, energetic track that addresses the highs and lows of social media use.

From the throbbing, synth-propelled opening to the soaring, distorted guitar driven chorus, ‘Algorithm Gods’ is an electrifying showcase of the band’s unique take on electro-rock.

Inspired by the likes of Bring Me The Horizon, Enter Shikari, and Grimes, the song offers a post-apocalyptic pop vision of a future society, with searching lyrics like ‘I’m not happy if the lights are not flashing/And I can hear no one screaming my name/Only happy when numbers are increasing/On the screen when the beeps won’t stop for a minute’ highlighting the dangers of a world focused on living online.

Lo Rays’ vocalist and founding member, Finnish songwriter Laura Takala, formed the band after moving to Glasgow in 2018. With Scott Bathgate (guitar), Ryan Jones (bass) and Murray Bartle (drums), the rising talents have supported the likes of Saint Agnes, Estrons and Glasgow-favourites Gallus.

‘Algorithm Gods’ was fully recorded at Lo Rays’ own home studios and produced by the band. The track features a striking palette derived in part from Laura’s self-designed synthesisers.

Speaking about the new single, the band said: “‘Algorithm Gods’ is about getting addicted to outside validation on social media, comparing your own life to everyone else’s and feeling bad about your own. I think we’ve all been there. Social media is supposed to be ‘social’ but it can be very isolating, especially when you’re in a bad mental space.”

The release of ‘Algorithm Gods’ marks the beginning of a promising year for the Glasgow group. In 2022, Lo Rays’ profile grew thanks to their self-produced single ‘Event Horizon’, which received support on Alyx Holcombe’s BBC Introducing Rock on Radio 1. A cyberpunk collaboration ‘Take You Down’ with producer Papa Sob was also chosen for a Track of the Week on BBC Introducing Scotland.

Lo Rays supported SNASH at packed-out King Tut’s and Gen and The Degenerates on the Glasgow-date of their tour. They ended 2022 on a high by playing live on BBC Introducing Scotland, performing three of their own songs and a rock version of Wham’s ‘Last Christmas’.

They headline Glasgow’s Hug & Pint on Friday 31st March, tickets available here.
